DEAR MUTHUH

The Bracelet...Pt. 2 by Philly

Dear Muthuh,

Remember the movie "Billy Jack"? Well, I felt like "Philly Jack" riding into this new world I was now in. There were these little houses along this dirt road with little kids out there jumping rope and chasing each other all around just like in the movie and when they heard the bike they all just stopped and watched me slowly ride by with total curiosity, wonder and excitement all over their little round faces. I did have my helmet off and with my own long, dark hair blowing in the breeze I couldn't help but wonder if perhaps that was why they didn't start throwing tomahawks and shooting arrows at me. I waved my silly kid wave at 'em and that's when they all dropped everything and started chasing me. My natural reaction was to slow down and then speed up real fast like you do when a dog comes out at you from the side of the road but then, fortunately, I came back into the real world, started laughing at myself and decided to stop and talk to them. Oh GOD!!! You would have thought I was Santa Claus to them but I felt more like the Pied Piper. These kids were nothing but precious. They were so cute and so sweet. There were little ones and big ones and they all had the same persona about them - a calming, caring, peacefulness about them that made me feel like I was in a place that was even better than my little shangri-la that I call home.

A hundred questions were asked in 5 seconds but the one that inevitably always seems to be first from anybody and everybody - was asked first here, too, and the reaction was no different from the little girls as it is from older females such as in my age group. When I answered, "I'm riding by myself", you could just see their minds go off wandering into another world while staring straight at me. We entertained each other for about 10 minutes then they popped the question I was really waiting for - "what are you doing here?" About that time, a man and woman walked up and one of the older kids told them that I was by myself and I was there to see Kelli. They, too, looked at me and asked the questions too about me and my motorcycle and soon they told me how to get to the craft shops. As I pulled away from them all, they all smiled and waved and as I passed by the next houses, the people (who had been standing outside watching) all waved too. Looked like I was in.

Got to the craft shop that Kelli was to be in. Kelli was a man who seemed to be in his late 30's. He was in charge of collecting all of the finished pieces of jewelry from the other Zuni's who worked in the shops on the reservation. Kelli takes this jewelry and goes out on the road selling it at crafts fairs, high-end stores in surrounding cities and wherever else they want to go.

(Muthuh, I gotta go. Patton and Tilly (my Golden Retrievers) are inside my house distracting me and I've got a good-looking man on my couch reading the newspaper that's doing the same thing. You gotta do watcha' gotta do sometimes and I gotta do it now. Save this till I get it together better - Philly)
