"Still Shuckin' Cold"
Pretty much the same routine again this morning - ya wear just about the same thing in 45 degree weather as ya do in 33 degrees, 'cept I started off in the leather cap this morning. In sight of the Interstate, but I turned south, headed back into Live Oak to pick up Hwy 90 again - this is the first time I went from Jacksonville to Tallahassee all on Hwy 90 - I recommend it. Pic #01 is the town hall in Suwanee County. The clock betrays my late start, but it WAS after breakfast in a little cafe across the street and a gas stop.
Pics #02 - 07 are not too far away in a little state park. Always can find me braking and leaning into a curve that takes me into local state parks. They're great places for butt breaks and often can find a few Kodak moments. This one was a Spanish Moss covered park on the banks, "way down upon the Suwanee River". Used to be a lot of commercial trade on this river in the old days.
Pic #06 is the promised leathers bomber's cap I use in helmetless states when it's cold. Comes from WolfTrax called the Street Flyer. The local Park Ranger pulled in right behind me, probably to ask why I blew past the $2 collection booth (looked closed to me!) and agreed to take the pic. After all the talk about riding and the bike, the trailer and the weather, he forgot to collect the $2 anyway.
Around Noon, I pulled into the Elks Club in Tallahassee. Now ya might think... "The ELKS CLUB?" ... but I'm here to tell ya, these are the heartiest bunch of drinkin' folks ya ever wanted to meet. Long past are the days when the Elks were the Judges and Bankers of the community - at least in Tally! hehehe Pic #08 is 'little' brother Jerry shuckin' oysters for a little fundraising. Every Saturday for lunch they shuck MANY dozens of oysters for the members who pull up for a little feast. Your humble journalist here passed on slurping down the snot-like delicasy in favor of a few Buds.
Pic #09 is a picture of their formal meeting room - their pride and joy. The furniture was obtained back in the early 1900's while one of their (at that time honorable) members was visiting the New York lodge - Lodge #1 I understand. They were removing all this furniture after they bought all new stuff. This guy bought it on the spot, and shipped it back to his home lodge in Tally. What ya don't see is 3 other similar groupings ona smaller scale around the room - all valued at well over a million dollars today - and they constantly fight to maintain possession of it - apparently New York wants it back!
Finally - a preview of some of the gang of theives on the side oyster shucking porch the day before the Wakulla Waltz - Sitting on my right is the esteemed Hogie, the Ride Captain, and self-confessed old man of the group - never to be seen without his trademarked cigar. The next two handsome guys are brothers Jeff and Jerry - (the Muthuh gene runs in the family!). These guys drive the all-important chase van, complete with emergency cooler (hey - some of these bar stops are like 3-4 miles between each other - come on!), and finally Rocky - our after-ride party host, and as you'll see tomorrow, one of the most left-brained creative guys I know. From here, we went to buy some fresh cigars, go to a little corner bar called Pockets, and eventually made it south to Jeff/Rocky's cabins way out in the woods, where we bumped into Cuz'n Sam and his bride Sonia, fresh in from their long day ride from South Carolina, finally freed from the snow. Pics tomorrow - we're too toasted to aim a camera.
