Select which day's journal you want to read:DAY 1 | DAY 2 | DAY 3 | DAY 4 | DAY 5 | DAY 6 | THIS IS DAY 7 | DAY 8 Tue 6/27/04 The morning was overcast and muggy. Weather called for more heavy rains, but they seemed to be holding off for now. Not much to tell ya about the remaining ride to the suburbs of Philly. Was dry for half of it on the Interstate around Albany - got within 40 miles of New York City, which is as close as I ever wish to get. The final hour was pretty wet off and on - and we found ourselves back at my step-sister's place, unloaded and dried off by 2pm. With a warning that the heavy front was due to pass over by 5pm, we gladly got into the car, grabbed the camera and headed off to find the 12 covered bridges in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. We found eight of them standing, found one burned down and one we got close to but the bridge has recently washed out on the approach to it (not the covered bridge itself). The other two were too far south to get to before it started raining severely and the back roads we were on began to show signs of flooding. (The signs were torrents of water crossing the roads... didn't take a genius to figure that out!) Some of these were on roads that I couldn't imagine had more than 3-4 cars a day on, but all were usable and drove over all of them. The covered bridges were constructed apparently, to protect the side supporting timbers from the weather - not the floorboards. They could be replaced often as needed - the supports were a one-time thing. At one time, Pennsylvania had over 1500 covered bridges. Made it back by 6pm - took Vikie and Jay to dinner in the driving rain, and displaced their daughter one more night from her bedroom. Another great visit with friends.
